Helena
(July 2003)(30 minutes real education from 1969 - as clear as yesterday). An announcement in English, our teacher's away. We're not informed why, but Helena will stay. She's the head of Department - English and Verse. She's not like 'our' teacher, so biased I curse. As she enters the room dark submits with a hiss. Everyone of us knows it, with our eyes find her kiss. Neal turns to me, 'Pete! Such a heart-felt sigh!'Oops! Was I that loud? (I feel rather shy).Losing tension is palpable, she teaches with love. She's in my heart with me, not at one remove. But what does 'love' mean? I hadn't a clue. Neurotic dependency? Marrying Sue? Needing children for company then snuffing their fire? Projection or lust? (sorry, 'romance or desire?'). Helena wore love as her entrance to life. Her path with a heart, her husband (and wife). Metaphysical reason for being on Earth. Profession, religion, personality curveHer estate and her testament, her approach to 'the whole'. Her meaning, her credo, her forte, her goal. For the first time this year I could venture a pointWithout humiliation, my soul out of joint'. Excuse me please, teacher. Do you agree?Life is suddenly simple! Or is it just me?'
